LET US BE INTOLERANT TOWARDS INTOLERANCE
There has been a lot of talks about Tolerance and Intolerance. Nothing is new, the only thing is that the latest hue and cry at the political stage and grouping of some hitherto unknown persons in telling others they are Tolerably Intolerant or Intolerably Tolerant, their own perspective is new. Maybe these fringe groups know that if they come to th
e limelight ( in current news TRP or visibility) then they score some better chances of snatching tickets in the next or 'next to next' elections, the flags does not matter.
I have passed a major part of my life in Delhi, have experienced this city as a tolerant one, helping each other during riots, Sikhs, Muslims, Hindus, all. Have experienced the intolerance, the planned massacre of Sikhs, the continued curfews on several occasions on several parts of the City. The Citizens were tolerant, fringe groups were not.
I have seen the Tolerance, hundreds of people celebrating religious functions together, and the Intolerance, where the organizing committees are split vertically to give space to more and more numbers of Secretaries and Treasurers.
I have seen Tolerance, all the pilgrims to the higher altitude of the Himalayas are Hindus and all the service providers and persons carrying persons in those harsh conditions are Muslims. And have seen the Intolerance of extremists who just visit such places, plant bombs, kill both Hindus and Muslims.
Celebrities are saying Intolerance is on the rise! Was it on the decline when generation after generation is forced into slavery? Phoolan Devi was Intolerant towards Thakurs and Thakurs were Tolerant enough to rape her for weeks together and nobody protested because everybody was Tolerant.
Naxalism is the product of the Intolerance of farmers towards Zamindars, but what were Zamindars, they were Intolerant towards recognizing the farmers as human beings! An erstwhile King starts organizing his people and telling them that they are equal human beings, the ruling Government becomes Intolerant towards him and he is bumped off. A Freedom Fighter demands the right of free movement of a citizen of India throughout India, and the Government is Intolerant towards him, he is bumped off.
Intolerance is increasing, they say. Why we have so many Political parties and divisions? To my mind, only due to intolerance among the leaders. We have had severe fights of Communists vs communists, Congress vs Congress, et all. The splits in the society, families, institutions, and political parties happen only due to mutual intolerance.
After the Chennai Floods, it has come in the national news that there are hundreds of cases against a journalist in Tamil Nadu because they criticized the decisions of the State Government. So much so that local journalists are helping those from out of state to show holes in Government administration saying that they had enough of cases and had to stay in the State, others can report freely. The intellectuals are tolerating the intolerance of the state.
In West Bengal, cases of Intolerance by the Chief Minister are well known, from levying conspiracy to murder charge on a cartoonist to branding the students as Maoist, to the slapping of a Police Officer because her car is getting late, did anyone in Bengal or entire India resign under protest or return his award on the brute show of Intolerance by the Government and the members of the Ruling Clan?
The incidents of throwing ink should be treated at par with the throwing of acid. The Murder of Bisada should be treated as premeditated gang murder and all accused be examined and condemned at the earliest. Whether it is the murder of Kalburgi, Gauri Lankesh, Shivani Bhatnagar, Shujat Bukhari, Shantanu Bhowmik, etc or the police torture of Soni Suri, or the action of fringe elements in several incidents where they take out rallies with immunity to side with the criminal, demanding the release of criminal and condemnation of victim, these are all trend of intolerance.
Any leader supporting such an incident should be made an accused. Any leader coming up with statements supporting rapists and finding faults with girls should be made co-accused in the event with relation to which they make the statements.
The Law should be allowed to take its course at a very fast pace, but why the hell show of strength by a few intolerant hot-headed men be allowed to disturb the peace of the Nation, Malign a whole community, and disrupt the Parliament for days and weeks together?
